Peter McKay

Peter McKay was born in 1951 in Akaroa, Banks Peninsula. From 1968-71 he worked as apprentice to jeweller Kobi Bosshard.  He has worked as a contemporary studio jeweller since 1986, exhibiting at leading jewellery galleries around New Zealand and making a living from his studio practice.

McKay’s jewellery has been collected by  Te Papa Tongarewa, and The Dowse Art Museum, Lower Hutt, and has featured in the major jewellery exhibitions and publications of the last 15 years. His work is in many private collections around the country.

In 2007, McKay’s work was celebrated in a retrospective of over three decades of his jewellery, entitled “Metaphysical Heart: Jewellery by Peter McKay”. Curated by Art Historian Damian Skinner, this touring exhibition surveyed the diversity and extent of McKay’s work, looking for the common threads of technique and concept that bind his work together.
