“For the last 30 years, my work’s context connects to all kinds of human discourse and rhetoric. They are surveys and journeys of value, and cover things like human freedom, animal rights, disasters, religious wars, climate change, etc. This work has the overarching context of how perceptive value is read.
Three weeks ago, I came to the conclusion that the prevailing context of my work plays its part in illusionary perceptions, not unlike the current societal focus on reality. I am using false interpretations of true value. In other words, what you see is not what you get. This can be found in how our society is unfolding into a hyper-reality, where values of truth are bent to fit any cause, not unlike how fake news and propaganda are promoted as a blatant truth. It is not the society I am proud of and therefore an attempt to break the stronghold of pareidolia (seeing things that are not there).
I have used discarded materials and my skills to add value to the point that I can detect the precious presence of jewellery. Some work took minutes to make, others years”.
Peter Deckers, 2022
Born in the Netherlands, Peter trained at the Vakschool Schoonhoven (1979) as a goldsmith and Academy of Arts in Rotterdam (1981), immigrated to New Zealand in 1985 and completed an MFA at Elam, Auckland University (2003).
Peter is both a contemporary artist and a craftsperson with ideas that make distinctive connections with jewellery conversations. His making processes and value philosophies are both the inspiration for his practice that is highlighted through revolving series of engaging artworks and installs. Peter’s practice is comprehensive.
Alongside his practice as an artist, Peter has been an educator for over 30 years (Whitireia Polytechnic, Wellington) and is the founder and artistic director of the HANDSHAKE project (2011–present). A unique project that has inspired the international art careers of several NZ emerging contemporary jewellers.
