Rewriting the Playbook
Manon van Kouswijk
21 Jul – 07 Aug 2021
In Rewriting The Playbook Manon van Kouswijk engages with the architecture of the exhibition space to establish connections between the space, the body (the viewer) and her jewellery as a series of intermediary objects.
Her project “Making Faces – A Jewellery Playbook” has been reconfigured for The National through a spatial installation that explores the various appearances of, and encounters with, a large sequence of beaded necklaces.
Roseanne Bartley writes in her text accompanying the exhibition:
“En masse the materiality of the colourful beads radiates, a band of blue stares back at eye height, while on closer inspection the play of cultural associations folds within and without. These necklaces perform like a finely tuned instrument, they play us as much as we play them”.
Manon van Kouswijk is an artist and jeweller from The Netherlands, based in Melbourne, Australia. Her approach to jewellery practice is multi-disciplinary and incorporates installation, photography, drawing and the making of artist books in collaboration with other artists and designers.
