Tender Hearth is an exhibition for the depths of winter, when warmth, shelter and a little enchantment are what we need. It recalls long nights gathered around the fire, telling stories from which strange creatures emerged to both scare and comfort. Tenderness was not simply a feeling but a form of physical comfort—something held, wrapped around us or passed from hand to hand.
Annie Mackenzie’s hand-dyed rugs carry the intimacy of patient labour. Kirsty Porter’s watercolour figures are tender, visceral and darkly funny. Nicola Shanley’s textile paintings evoke domestic warmth and storytelling, while Kate Fitzharris’ ceramic vessels give human form to imagined beings.
Together, these works offer warmth against the winter chill: a gathering of material, story, humour and pathos around a tender hearth.
