What I’m Wearing

‘What I’m Wearing’ was a social media project that was borne out of the first global lockdown in 2020.
The National’s director, Caroline Billing, began to ask people on Instagram to share what jewellery they were wearing during their days at home.  The result, a series of over 30 posts through April and May 2020.

With the assistance of  Creative New Zealand, The National has published the project in hard copy, with writing by Emma Ng (a revised essay from an article in The Pantograph Punch, 2020).  Read the full article here.

“‘What I’m Wearing’ played to and with the strengths of contemporary jewellery and social media – the selfie, the quick snap pics, the hashtags, story sharing, writing, internationally connecting, commenting. The series grew quickly and felt playful, humorous, yet other posts were serious and writing was poignant.

It felt relevant to create an object as a tangible reminder of a time when we were all in uncharted territory and trying to understand, and make meaning in a new quotidian”.
